Sura 70: The Heights (Al-Ma’aarej) ( سورة المعارج )
بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمٰنِ الرَّحيمِ
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
١:سَأَلَ سائِلٌ بِعَذابٍ واقِعٍ
[70:1] A questioner may question the inevitable retribution.
٢:لِلكٰفِرينَ لَيسَ لَهُ دافِعٌ
[70:2] For the disbelievers, none can stop it.
٣:مِنَ اللَّهِ ذِى المَعارِجِ
[70:3] From GOD; Possessor of the highest Height.
٤:تَعرُجُ المَلٰئِكَةُ وَالرّوحُ إِلَيهِ فى يَومٍ كانَ مِقدارُهُ خَمسينَ أَلفَ سَنَةٍ
[70:4] The angels, with their reports, climb to Him in a day that equals fifty thousand years.
٥:فَاصبِر صَبرًا جَميلًا
[70:5] Therefore, you shall resort to a gracious patience.
٦:إِنَّهُم يَرَونَهُ بَعيدًا
[70:6] For they see it far away.
٧:وَنَرىٰهُ قَريبًا
[70:7] While we see it very close.
٨:يَومَ تَكونُ السَّماءُ كَالمُهلِ
[70:8] The day will come when the sky will be like molten rocks.
٩:وَتَكونُ الجِبالُ كَالعِهنِ
[70:9] The mountains will be like fluffy wool.
١٠:وَلا يَسـَٔلُ حَميمٌ حَميمًا
[70:10] No friend will care about his close friend.
١١:يُبَصَّرونَهُم يَوَدُّ المُجرِمُ لَو يَفتَدى مِن عَذابِ يَومِئِذٍ بِبَنيهِ
[70:11] When they see them, the guilty will wish he could give his own children as ransom, to spare him the retribution of that day.
١٢:وَصٰحِبَتِهِ وَأَخيهِ
[70:12] Also his spouse, and his brother.
١٣:وَفَصيلَتِهِ الَّتى تُـٔويهِ
[70:13] Even his whole tribe that raised him.
١٤:وَمَن فِى الأَرضِ جَميعًا ثُمَّ يُنجيهِ
[70:14] Even all the people on earth, if it would save him.
١٥:كَلّا إِنَّها لَظىٰ
[70:15] No; it is aflame.
١٦:نَزّاعَةً لِلشَّوىٰ
[70:16] Eager to burn.
١٧:تَدعوا مَن أَدبَرَ وَتَوَلّىٰ
[70:17] It calls on those who turned away.
١٨:وَجَمَعَ فَأَوعىٰ
[70:18] Those who hoarded and counted.
١٩:إِنَّ الإِنسٰنَ خُلِقَ هَلوعًا
[70:19] Indeed, the human being is anxious.
٢٠:إِذا مَسَّهُ الشَّرُّ جَزوعًا
[70:20] If touched by adversity, despondent.
٢١:وَإِذا مَسَّهُ الخَيرُ مَنوعًا
[70:21] If blessed by wealth, stingy.
٢٢:إِلَّا المُصَلّينَ
[70:22] Except for the worshipers.
٢٣:الَّذينَ هُم عَلىٰ صَلاتِهِم دائِمونَ
[70:23] Who always observe their contact prayers (Salat).
٢٤:وَالَّذينَ فى أَموٰلِهِم حَقٌّ مَعلومٌ
[70:24] Part of their money is set aside.
٢٥:لِلسّائِلِ وَالمَحرومِ
[70:25] For the poor and the needy.
٢٦:وَالَّذينَ يُصَدِّقونَ بِيَومِ الدّينِ
[70:26] They believe in the Day of Judgment.
٢٧:وَالَّذينَ هُم مِن عَذابِ رَبِّهِم مُشفِقونَ
[70:27] They reverence their Lord’s requital.
٢٨:إِنَّ عَذابَ رَبِّهِم غَيرُ مَأمونٍ
[70:28] Their Lord’s requital is not taken for granted.
٢٩:وَالَّذينَ هُم لِفُروجِهِم حٰفِظونَ
[70:29] They keep their chastity.
٣٠:إِلّا عَلىٰ أَزوٰجِهِم أَو ما مَلَكَت أَيمٰنُهُم فَإِنَّهُم غَيرُ مَلومينَ
[70:30] (They have relations) only with their spouses, or what is legally theirs—
٣١:فَمَنِ ابتَغىٰ وَراءَ ذٰلِكَ فَأُولٰئِكَ هُمُ العادونَ
[70:31] anyone who transgresses these limits is a sinner—
٣٢:وَالَّذينَ هُم لِأَمٰنٰتِهِم وَعَهدِهِم رٰعونَ
[70:32] And the believers keep their word; they are trustworthy.
٣٣:وَالَّذينَ هُم بِشَهٰدٰتِهِم قائِمونَ
[70:33] Their testimony is truthful.
٣٤:وَالَّذينَ هُم عَلىٰ صَلاتِهِم يُحافِظونَ
[70:34] They consistently observe their contact prayers (Salat), on time.
٣٥:أُولٰئِكَ فى جَنّٰتٍ مُكرَمونَ
[70:35] They have deserved a position of honor, in Paradise.
٣٦:فَمالِ الَّذينَ كَفَروا قِبَلَكَ مُهطِعينَ
[70:36] What is keeping those who disbelieved from joining you?
٣٧:عَنِ اليَمينِ وَعَنِ الشِّمالِ عِزينَ
[70:37] To the right, and to the left, they flee.
٣٨:أَيَطمَعُ كُلُّ امرِئٍ مِنهُم أَن يُدخَلَ جَنَّةَ نَعيمٍ
[70:38] How can any of them expect to enter the blissful Paradise?
٣٩:كَلّا إِنّا خَلَقنٰهُم مِمّا يَعلَمونَ
[70:39] Never; we created them, and they know from what.
٤٠:فَلا أُقسِمُ بِرَبِّ المَشٰرِقِ وَالمَغٰرِبِ إِنّا لَقٰدِرونَ
[70:40] I solemnly swear by the Lord of the easts and the wests; we are able—
٤١:عَلىٰ أَن نُبَدِّلَ خَيرًا مِنهُم وَما نَحنُ بِمَسبوقينَ
[70:41] to substitute better people in your place; we can never be defeated.
٤٢:فَذَرهُم يَخوضوا وَيَلعَبوا حَتّىٰ يُلٰقوا يَومَهُمُ الَّذى يوعَدونَ
[70:42] Therefore, let them blunder and play, until they meet the day that is awaiting them.
٤٣:يَومَ يَخرُجونَ مِنَ الأَجداثِ سِراعًا كَأَنَّهُم إِلىٰ نُصُبٍ يوفِضونَ
[70:43] That is the day they come out of the graves in a hurry, as if herded to the (sacrificial) altars.
٤٤:خٰشِعَةً أَبصٰرُهُم تَرهَقُهُم ذِلَّةٌ ذٰلِكَ اليَومُ الَّذى كانوا يوعَدونَ
[70:44] With their eyes subdued, shame will cover them. That is the day that is awaiting them.
