Sura 90: The Town (Al-Balad) ( سورة البلد )
بِسمِ اللَّهِ الرَّحمٰنِ الرَّحيمِ
In the name of God, Most Gracious, Most Merciful
١:لا أُقسِمُ بِهٰذَا البَلَدِ
[90:1] I solemnly swear by this town.
٢:وَأَنتَ حِلٌّ بِهٰذَا البَلَدِ
[90:2] The town where you live.
٣:وَوالِدٍ وَما وَلَدَ
[90:3] The begetting and the begotten.
٤:لَقَد خَلَقنَا الإِنسٰنَ فى كَبَدٍ
[90:4] We created the human being to work hard (to redeem himself).*

٥:أَيَحسَبُ أَن لَن يَقدِرَ عَلَيهِ أَحَدٌ
[90:5] Does he think that no one will ever call him to account?
٦:يَقولُ أَهلَكتُ مالًا لُبَدًا
[90:6] He boasts, “I spent so much money!”
٧:أَيَحسَبُ أَن لَم يَرَهُ أَحَدٌ
[90:7] Does he think that no one sees him?
٨:أَلَم نَجعَل لَهُ عَينَينِ
[90:8] Did we not give him two eyes?
٩:وَلِسانًا وَشَفَتَينِ
[90:9] A tongue and two lips?
١٠:وَهَدَينٰهُ النَّجدَينِ
[90:10] Did we not show him the two paths?
١١:فَلَا اقتَحَمَ العَقَبَةَ
[90:11] He should choose the difficult path.
١٢:وَما أَدرىٰكَ مَا العَقَبَةُ
[90:12] Which one is the difficult path?
١٣:فَكُّ رَقَبَةٍ
[90:13] The freeing of slaves.
١٤:أَو إِطعٰمٌ فى يَومٍ ذى مَسغَبَةٍ
[90:14] Feeding, during the time of hardship.
١٥:يَتيمًا ذا مَقرَبَةٍ
[90:15] Orphans who are related.
١٦:أَو مِسكينًا ذا مَترَبَةٍ
[90:16] Or the poor who is in need.
١٧:ثُمَّ كانَ مِنَ الَّذينَ ءامَنوا وَتَواصَوا بِالصَّبرِ وَتَواصَوا بِالمَرحَمَةِ
[90:17] And being one of those who believe, and exhorting one another to be steadfast, and exhorting one another to be kind.
١٨:أُولٰئِكَ أَصحٰبُ المَيمَنَةِ
[90:18] These have deserved happiness.
١٩:وَالَّذينَ كَفَروا بِـٔايٰتِنا هُم أَصحٰبُ المَشـَٔمَةِ
[90:19] As for those who disbelieved in our revelations, they have incurred misery.
٢٠:عَلَيهِم نارٌ مُؤصَدَةٌ
[90:20] They will be confined in the Hellfire.
